Pioneers split scrimmage games

GENTRY -- Tuesday, Aug. 22, the Pioneer football team hosted Green Forest and Elkins for preseason scrimmages. First, the Pioneers played Green Forest. Green Forest took the lead early on with a touchdown and 2-point conversion. However, late in the game, sophomore Charlie Reams took a handoff into the end zone for a touchdown. Backup sophomore quarterback Brandon Atwood connected with senior receiver Tanner Christie for the 2-point conversion. The game would end in an 8-8 tie.

The Pioneers closed out the night with a loss to Elkins by a score of 20-12.

Senior quarterback Doo Faulkenberry said, "It's great to be back on the field again. It's been a long summer and we've worked really hard to prepare for the season."

Sophomore lineman Ross Wilmoth said, "Playing in a varsity game, even though it was just a scrimmage, was definitely a step up from any game in junior high. The guys are all bigger, stronger, faster and they hit a lot harder."

The Pioneers open the season on Friday, Sept. 1, with a home game against Lavaca.
