GRAVETTE -- "Pawsitive" and Wise Students (PAWS) award winners for the month were honored at the Glenn Duffy Elementary School monthly Rise and Shine assembly Monday, Dec. 4. PAWS grade-level students for December are Carter Cassidy, Brooklyn Kennedy, Reece Miller, Mystic Warbritton, Caden Wellesley and Wyatt Whitehead. Second-grade students and teachers led portions of the assembly and joined staff and guests in recognizing students for class and individual awards.

The Glenn Duffy Elementary PAWS Program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education. The school staff always watches for opportunities to encourage students for excellent character, behavior or effort.

The character word for December is Cooperation. This is defined as working together for a common purpose. Principal Zane Vanderpool told students how teachers and other school personnel work together to plan lessons for children. He included how teachers cooperate to be sure every student is able to share resources such as laptop computers and other devices. Vanderpool also described the cooperation and planning it takes "behind the scenes" for the children to attend assemblies to celebrate their success.

Second-grade teachers taught about this month's social skill, dealing with losing. Steps to practice this skill include:

• Take a deep breath and count to five;

• Remember everyone can't win every time;

• Think about the last time you won and say, "Maybe I'll win next time";

• Decide whether or not you want to play again or do something else.

Second-grade teachers are Jared Magness, Jennifer Davis, Angie Denver, Amber Sisemore, Vicki Holloway and Traci Rutledge.

Glenn Duffy Elementary students were recognized for their work in the district's Christmas card contest, in which students design the cards sent out by the school district. Laken Ellis, Lexie Jarvis and Jayden Nichols are winners from Glenn Duffy. Laken is the overall school contest winner.
