Pioneers win close game against Tigers, fall to Elks

GENTRY -- After losing to Elkins on Dec. 12 in Gentry, 60-43, the Gentry Pioneers won a close game against the West Fork Tigers on Friday night for a 61-58 victory.

The Pioneers took an early lead in the first quarter, 14-10, behind the strong shooting of Jon Faulkenberry and four flawless shots at the free-throw line by Ethan Hammond, but that lead evaporated away in the second quarter and the pioneers were down, 34-33, by the half.

Strong third and fourth quarters gave the Pioneers the edge. They were up by two at the end of the third quarter, 40-38, and by three when the final buzzer sounded, 61-58.

Hammond finished with 18 points in the game, 14 at the free-throw line. Faulkenberry had 16 points and Dylan Kilgore, 13.

Against Elkins on Dec. 12, the Elks took the lead early and built onto that lead up until the end, taking the conference game by 17 points, 60-43.

The Pioneers finished last week at 2-4 in conference play and 4-5 overall.

Their next scheduled game was in Pea Ridge tonight, Dec. 20. Game time is approximately 7:30 p.m., with the girls starting about 6 p.m.
