Dollar General announces purchase of Decatur's former Walmart Express store

— Dollar General announced today that it has completed the purchase of the former Walmart Express location at 154 East Roller Avenue in Decatur. Dollar General anticipates relocating its existing store location into the purchased site and celebrate the grand opening of its new store by summer 2017.

“Dollar General is excited to add this location to our existing store base. We look forward to the opportunity to better serve our customers in these communities by continuing to provide the convenience and value they expect from Dollar General,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer.

In its expanded format, Dollar General will offer area residents a convenient new place to shop for essentials including fresh meat, produce and fuel at everyday low prices. Dollar General announced the purchase of 41 former Walmart Express stores in July 2016.

The new store is approximately 12,000 square feet, compared to a traditional Dollar General format that is approximately 9,100 square feet. The additional 3,000 square feet will allow Dollar General to provide fresh meat and produce, items currently unavailable in its current location, in addition to the value of America’s most trusted brands and our own private brands that customers expect from Dollar General. The new store will also provide customers with a fresh new layout, which provides a more customer-friendly format with faster checkout.

Additionally, the new store is expected to employ approximately 15 people, depending on the individual needs of the store. Anyone interested in joining the Dollar General team may visit the Career section at www.dollargeneral.com/careers.

Dollar General stores offer convenience and value to customers by providing a focused selection of national name brands and private brands of food, housewares, seasonal items, cleaning supplies, basic apparel and health/beauty products. The store’s fresh layout is designed to make shopping simple for customers. Seasonal products are displayed in the center of the store, departments are easily recognizable with visible signage and coolers are conveniently located at the front of the store.

Dollar General gives its customers more than everyday low prices on basic merchandise. Dollar General is deeply involved in the communities it serves and is an ardent supporter of literacy and education. At the cash register of every Dollar General store, customers interested in learning how to read, speak English or prepare for their high school equivalency test can pick up a brochure with a postage-paid reply card that can be mailed in for a referral to a local organization that offers free literacy services. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $127 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping nearly more than 7.9 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
