Gravette council votes to issue sales tax bonds

GRAVETTE -- Representatives of Crews and Associates attended the January meeting of the Gravette city council and gave a presentation on the proposed sales tax bonds. They presented documents outlining a breakdown of projects and costs to be financed by the bonds and explained that Farmers and Merchants Bank of Stuttgart is trustee for the bonds.

Four separate construction funds will be held by the trustee, one for street improvements, one for parks and recreational improvements, one for sewer improvements and one for sidewalk improvements.

Following the presentation, council members passed an ordinance authorizing the issuance of sales tax bonds and pledging collections of a .75 percent sales and use tax to pay the principal and interest on the bonds.

In other action at the council meeting, members passed ordinances to split a lot owned by Donnie Parsons on Radder Lane in Gravette and to split a lot owned by John Holloway on Arkansas Highway 279 in Hiwasse.

Resolutions were passed approving adjustments and closing the city budgets for 2015 and 2016. Council members voted to open a separate bank account for FEMA funds.

Council members voted to approve a contract with BiLD Architects of Fayetteville to provide design and construction administration for a 1.38 mile walking-bike trail in the city. Proposed cost of engineering and architectural fees for the project is $82,420.

Danny Banks spoke to council members in the public comment period at the beginning of the meeting. He requested that the access road to Banks Lane be given a name and signs be erected to mark the road. He said the four families who lived on that road needed an identifiable 911 address so they could be easily located in case of an emergency.

Mayor Kurt Maddox gave his state of the city address at the close of the meeting, detailing progress in the city in the last year.

"I'm excited about what we've accomplished," he said, and thanked council members for their role in making it happen.
