— This time of year, students from across the country settle into the mundane routine of getting out of bed, getting dressed, getting on a bus and going to classes. Little concern is given to the number of days they have attended, only on how many remain before summer. For a group of kids at one Decatur school, one day marked an important milestone in the 2016-17 school year.

Students of Christina Brown and Deborah Wenger's kindergarten classes at Decatur Northside Elementary gathered around their work tables fashioning hats, beads, necklaces and posters to commemorate Jan. 24 as the 100th day of school.

School began for Decatur students on Aug. 15, 2016. Aside from Christmas and Thanksgiving breaks, Labor Day and a few in-service meetings, students have attended classes every weekday since.

Fortunately for the students at Northside, the 100th day is over the half way mark on the school calender. In less than four months, these kids will have completed another school year. Then begins three months of summer fun.

So, parents, beware, there are less than 80 days of school before summer vacation begins, ample time to make plans for summer activities.
