— Gentry High School students in Alishia Ramsey's pre-AP English II class wrote and illustrated their own children's books and then, on Jan. 11, read their books to first grade students at Gentry Primary School.

The first-grade students listened attentively as each book was read by its author or team of authors.

"The students were able to build their literacy skills and creativity by writing and illustrating their own children's books," Ramsey said. "Some students worked in groups of two, while others worked alone," she added.

Ramsey said this is a project that the pre-AP English II class does each year.

"After the books are written, the (high school) class goes to the elementary school and the students read them to the first grade classes," Ramsey explained. "This is something that both groups (10th graders and first graders) look forward to each year. The first graders are very attentive and enjoy the interaction with the high schoolers. The teachers also look forward to us coming and reading our books because they had a lot of these (high school) kids when they were in the first grade," Ramsey said.
