— Peterson Gym at Decatur High School is a perfect place for fans to display their Bulldog Pride. When the bleachers are filled and the Bulldog fans rally behind their team, the entire place comes alive. At times, the sound is deafening. And the 2017 Decatur Colors Day celebration was no exception.

Students from Decatur Middle and High Schools filled Peterson Gym during the 2017 pep rally Jan. 20. Their goal, to cheer both the Lady Bulldog and the Bulldog basketball teams on to victory.

The pep rally started with a competition between the fifth-eighth graders of the middle school and the ninth-12fth graders of the high school. First up was the fifth graders whose enthusiastic cheers set the bar for the rest of the competition. In the end, the sophomores prevailed and took first place in the contest.

The colors day court passed in review to cheers from their peers. Included in this year's court were senior maids Jordan Arevalo, Michelle Vang, Isabel Rodriguez and Meagan Smith; junior maids Johnna Herron and Mathline Jesse; sophomore maid Paige Vann; and freshman maid Tabitha Tilley. The court was escorted to center by members of the Decatur Bulldog basketball team, including Leng Lee, Ayden Cooke, Jason Porter, Bracy Owens, Marck Guardarrama, Taylor Haisman, Garry Woods and Wyatt Bingham.

John Unger, boys' basketball coach, and Jeff Melton, girls' basketball coach, both gave a short pep talk to the assembly before introducing their players.

The colors day assembly concluded with a tug of war and an obstacle course run between the fifth through 12th graders. The senior class won the tug-of-war contest. The junior class took the obstacle course run.

Just before the beginning of the boys' game the colors day court was presented one final time. Then the moment came to announce the 2017 colors day king and queen. That honor went to Meagan Smith and Bracy Owens. Both Smith and Owens had little time to celebrate because they soon traded their dress clothing for basketball uniforms and shoes. Once the game started, Owens went to work and sank a three-pointer at the beginning of the first quarter to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. While Smith failed to score during the Lady Bulldogs matchup, she had several key defensive plays that aided the girls in their win against the Lady Saints.

In the Decatur-St. Paul contest, the Bulldogs overwhelmed the Saints, 63-26, while the Lady Bulldogs took the victory against the Lady Saints, 43-36.

The Decatur Colors Day celebration concluded with a dance in the cafeteria of Decatur High School. Thirty-five Decatur High School students took advantage of the event to celebrate both victories, thus ending another perfect colors day event for another year.
