— One of the most popular events at the annual Sulphur Springs Independence Day celebration is the car show. Again this year, collectors of vehicles, old and new, drove their prized cars and pickups into the park and lined them up for the judges' inspection. Proud owners, many of whom had devoted countless hours in restoring or modifying their vehicles, could be seen polishing them up as they awaited the judging at 1 p.m.

Winners were announced about 3 p.m., with Red Norris of Gentry winning the best of show award, an unusual custom-made table lamp created by Longhorn Tank and Trailer of Gravette. Norris also won a first place trophy in the classic car division.

Plaques were awarded to J.D. Boyd for Under Construction, Jim Kirby for Cleanest Ride and Darren Cross for Most Custom.

Trophies were awarded in the following divisions:

Cleanest Ride: Shawn (last name unavailable at press time), First; Robert Moorman, Second; Mark "Jo" Brown, Third.

Rat Rod: Larry Burge, First; Bill Rodgers, Second.

Most Original: Gary Lowery, First; Tom King, Second; Pete Iles, Third.
