— DECATUR -- Students and teachers gathered in the cafeteria at Decatur Northside Elementary June 27 to learn about thunderstorm formation and severe weather preparedness.

Local television meteorologist, Laura Huckabee, traveled to Decatur to teach students about the weather and its many dangers.

Huckabee explained the science behind clouds and how thunderstorms work. She also talked about tornadoes and what to do in case one is in the area.

Since the program began in late May, Decatur students from Northside Elementary, Decatur Middle School, and even a few from the high school, have participated. The students utilized their time honing their math, reading, science and English skills, while exploring their artistic side through art and music.

Every Tuesday afternoon, kids from kindergarten, first and second grades make the short trip from Northside to the Decatur pool in Old City Park. This gives the kids a chance to unwind while getting them away from video games, computers and cell phones. On Thursday, the older kids get their chance under the sun.

The Decatur summer program began in late May and continues through the end of July. For more information on the Decatur school summer program, go to decatursd.com or call 479-752-3986.
