Library offering book fine amnesty

— Gentry's public library is offering to pardon and forgive fines and penalties for overdue books and library materials if they are returned on Saturdays.

No matter how long overdue, if items are returned to the Gentry Public Library between 5:01 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. on Monday, all fines will be excused. Patrons may also bring items into the library from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturdays or slide them into the drop box located on the west side of the library building during the amnesty times.

When items are returned on Saturdays, all fees will be pardoned and good-library standing will be restored, a library press release stated.

"Maybe you found a borrowed library book mixed with other books on your shelves. Or, maybe you found a borrowed audio book in your car's trunk. Or, perhaps you realize one of your kid's DVDs doesn't really belong to your kid but to the library. Please don't just put the book back on the shelf, leave the audio book in the trunk, or slide the DVD back into the toy box. Although the daily overdue item fine is only 5 cents a day, fines for items weeks or months overdue can be pretty hefty. Bring them back on any Saturday, and your fine will be forgiven," the press release states.

"No matter how long you've had the item, if it is returned to the Gentry Public Library between 5:01 on Friday evening and 8:00 on Monday morning, all fines are excused ... The GPL thanks you, and the patrons who would like to read that book, hear that story or watch that movie thank you," the release says.
