Council adopts ordinance closing unused streets, alleys

SPRINGTOWN -- According to draft minutes of the May 9 council meeting, the town adopted an ordinance to close unused streets and alleys in accordance with the county's 911 street map.

George Rhoads, the town attorney, drafted an ordinance to close all unused streets and alleys in Dodgens Addition, according to draft minutes. The ordinance was designed to clarify addresses and locations for emergency responders and alleviate the need to maintain roadways which have not been open for decades.

According to draft minutes, Rhoads read the ordinance aloud. Chuck Bostwick made a motion to pass Ordinance 2017:01 on its first reading. The town will now focus on the original town of Springtown, as designated on the plat, to continue to update the roadways of the town, according to draft minutes.

Ordinance 2016:02, a petition to close an alley is no longer necessary and was to be removed from the agenda, according to draft minutes.

Draft minutes say that the town's speed limit signs will need to be "enumerated and ordered." Speed limit within the town will be 20 mph throughout.

State audit is complete, according to draft minutes, but the town has yet not received the final report. Mayor Terri Glenn will follow up on the legislative audit.

It was reported that the spring cleanup on April 22 went well, the dumpster was full and many items were recycled.

In new business, a request was made to purchase picnic tables for the park. This will be considered and a cost estimate compiled, according to draft minutes.

Alderman Janet Bostwick suggested that a welcome sign/historical marker be placed in the park. Mayor Glenn will contact the Benton county Historical Society for guidance.

Due to council member conflicts, the town's next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 12, instead of at the regular second Tuesday date.
