GENTRY -- The Arkansas Motor Vehicle Commission awarded Gentry High School Conversion Charter a grant for $15,136.11 from the education and training grant program for the furtherance of the school's diesel mechanic program.
In Act 258 of 2015, the Arkansas Legislature gave the Motor Vehicle Commission the authority to award up to $150,000.00 in grants to secondary and post-secondary institutions in Arkansas. The Commission awarded 10 grants in equal amounts of $15,136.11.
The purpose of the grant is to provide funds to assist institutions that offer education and training, primarily in the field of vehicle service and maintenance, in improving their training programs with the goal of growing the available workforce for the future. Only motor vehicle related programs and coalitions of such programs can be approved for grant funding. The list of programs includes but is not limited to the following: automotive, collision repair, diesel, alternative fuels, damage analysis and estimation, engine machinist, parts specialist and tire center operator.
The school district currently has under construction a two-bay diesel mechanic lab and classroom facility for its career education classes and programs. In addition to the diesel mechanic training, the district offers classes and training for students wishing to become certified nursing aides and personal care assistants, with a classroom area and lab included in the facility under construction on the high school campus.
