— The school board in Gentry, at a special meeting on Monday, approved the recommendation of the assistant superintendent screening committee and hired Christie Toland of Morrilton for the assistant superintendent post.

Toland is currently employed by the North Little Rock School District as the director of its college and career readiness program. She was instrumental in the creation of a conversion charter school within the high school and worked to create educational programs to prepare students for a career in the workforce after graduation from high school.

Terrie Metz, chairwoman of the screening committee and also the new Gentry district superintendent on July 1, said the district received approximately 15 applications for the post and Toland seemed to be the perfect fit for the job in Gentry and the one to carry on the work started by Judy Winslett, who is resigning from her assistant superintendent post at the end of the month to take on full-time employment as an assistant professor at John Brown University in Siloam Springs.

The board also accepted the resignations of Chandra Sooter as kindergarten teacher, Bryanna Jaramillo as high school art teacher, William Catron as welding instructor, Denna Luedecke as middle school special education aide, and Donnie Millsap as high school in-school-suspension aide. The board approved a $500 step raise for the positions of dean of students, speech therapist and athletic trainer.
