Cardinals fly past Lions in baseball contest

GRAVETTE -- The Gravette Lions faced a formidable opponent March 9 when they played host to the Farmington Cardinals in a nonconference varsity baseball game at Gravette Baseball Stadium. The Cardinals stormed into town and quickly gained control of the contest early in the first inning.

On the mound for the Gravette Lions was Hunter Cole, who completed two innings, pitching 62 times with one strikeout, two walks, six hits, eight runs and 15 at bats. Brodie Parsons relieved Cole at the top of the third to complete five innings, pitching 68 times with two strikeouts, six hits, five runs, on 21 at bats.

In the top of the first inning, the Cardinals were able to score two runs on a pair of Lion errors with no outs. Two more hits by Farmington extended their lead to 4-0 going into the bottom of the first.

Gravette scored two runs on a pair of singles by Mason Dagley and Chase Owens in the first inning. Owens scored again in the third on a single to center field for the third and final run for the Lions. Gravette finished the contest with three runs, one hit and six errors.

Farmington scored four runs in the second, one run in the fourth and two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the game with 13 runs, 14 hits and one error and take home a 13-3 win.

The Lions will travel to Gentry March 16 to take on the Pioneers. The varsity game starts at 5 p.m., with the junior varsity to start at the conclusion of the first contest.

In other games last week, the Lions fell to Grove, 8-1, in a nonconference game on March 6 but came back to beat Harrison, 8-4, on March 7.
