GENTRY -- Five students from Gentry High School traveled to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Okla., for their Business and Technology Day competition on March 1. Students competed in three events against other schools from Oklahoma, Missouri and from Gravette.

Representing Gentry were Clay Wills, Destiny Bolles, Jake Ernest, Derek German and Braden Rector. The students' teacher, Joni Wilson, said this was the first time they have attended the Oklahoma competition.

"I knew they could do well, so we decided to go even though most of the other schools had over 20 kids competing," Wilson said. "It was kind of a last-minute decision to enter them, but we decided to go for the experience."

Derek German placed first in the job interview category, first in personal finance and second in general business.

Braden Rector took written tests and placed first in computer applications and first place in computer concepts.

Both German and Rector received $600 scholarships for each first-place finish, giving each of them a total of $1,200 in scholarships.

In addition to Gentry's individual honors, the students brought home the second-place trophy for the highest team score. The first- and third-place awards went to Missouri schools with more than 20 students competing.

"I am so proud of these kids," Wilson said. "They represented Gentry well."

Both German and Rector are seniors at GHS who recently won first place in their FBLA competitive events at the district competition. German will be competing at state FBLA in graphic design and Rector will be competing in computer applications. The state competition for FBLA is in April at Little Rock.
