Pioneers drop two last week

GENTRY -- The Pioneers had a tough week on the baseball diamond last week, falling to Lavaca and to Elkins.

The Gentry Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a one-run lead over visiting Lavaca on Thursday, but Lavaca scored eight in the third inning and another one in the fouth to take the game, 11-3, in four and one half innings.

Ayden Smartt singled in the first and stole second. He made it to third when both Carlos Alvarez Del Castillo and Sean Pierce were hit by a pitch. Then with bases loaded, Tanner Christie hit a fly-ball single to center, bringing in Smartt and Del Castillo. Pierce scored on a sacrifice ball hit to the pitcher by Peyton Wright.

The Pioneers had four hits in the game, two of them by Christie. He also had two RBIs.

Damon Phillips, Jacob Lothes and Dylan Rayburn all pitched in the game for Gentry.

Elkins scored four in the bottom of the first and two each in the fifth and sixth innings to beat Gentry in an away league game on March 6.

Gentry's only two runs came in the top of the second on an Ayden Smartt double, bringing in Peyton Wright and Carlos Alvarez Del Castillo (both were hit by a pitch to get on).

Smartt was two for three in the game and had two RBIs.

On the mound for Gentry were Smartt and Myles McFerron. Smartt struck out six in four innings and McFerron struck out two in two.
