Bulldogs, Lady Bulldogs lose first games in district tournament

DECATUR -- The Bulldog baseball team traveled to Omaha for the final game of the season April 24 as they prepared for the first entry into the 1A district tournament in Harrison April 27.

For the second time this season, the Omaha Eagles overwhelmed Decatur with a 11-1 win.

Heavy rain midway through the week forced the Bulldogs indoors and they were unable to get in a full practice session.

Decatur's next game was in the first round of the 1A Northwest district tournament in Harrison. The Bulldogs faced the Alpena Leopards, which the Bulldogs had defeated on the road two weeks earlier. Decatur held a nine point lead until the top of the fourth when Alpena rallied to overtake and eventually lead the Bulldogs. Decatur fought back with a rally of its own, but it was not enough to overtake the Leopards, who took the victory, 20-18.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to play in the regional tournament at Harrison on May 2 (after press time).

The Lady Bulldog softball team also struggled as they completed their 2017 season with a loss to Omaha, 15-3, on April 24.

In the 1A Northwest District softball tournament April 27, the Lady Bulldogs held a 6-0 lead over the Jasper Pirates until the sixth inning when attrition caught up with Decatur, allowing the Lady Pirates to take a commanding 16-7 lead and eventually the game.

The Lady Bulldogs were also to travel to Harrison for the 1A regional tournament.
