DECATUR -- With the end of the school year just three weeks away, the staff at Decatur Middle and High Schools decided to break up the monotony by holding a dance off between the two school principals.

Students gathered at Peterson Gym in Decatur May 4 to see who would take home the Dance Off crown and who would wear the dance dunce cap.

On one side of the basketball court was John Unger, dean of students at Decatur Middle School, and his teaching staff; on the other, Toby Conrad, Decatur High School principal, and some of his staff. Both groups lined up between the two basketball goals to await the start of the contest.

Once the music started, there was no turning back for both principals as they rocked to the beat. It soon became apparent who would win the competition. Unger and his staff were into the groove (as some would say). Conrad, on the other hand, had to get a few quick dance lessons from one of the sophomores during the contest.

Conrad was able to pull off a little jig but, by that time, the contest was decided.

In the end, there could be only one Dance Off winner and that title went to John Unger, who put on a performance that rivaled Gene Kelly. Unfortunately, the dance dunce cap went to Conrad.

The assembly concluded with several members of each class taking to the court for two line dances, including the "Macarena."
