GRAVETTE -- Members of the Gravette school board held five student expulsion hearings recently. Unofficial minutes from those meetings show that board members voted to suspend three middle school students from Nov. 1 until Nov. 14 and place them in a random drug testing pool. All three will also be required to complete eight hours of community service by the end of Christmas break, with Duane Thomas, middle school principal, overseeing the community service. One student will also be referred to counseling. Votes on all actions were unanimous.
Board president Tracy Moorman addressed the students being considered for expulsion and told them that the middle school handbook has been updated to reflect drug policy changes. Expulsion would be the likely outcome for infractions of this nature in the future.
Board members also voted unanimously to expel two students for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year and place them in a random drug testing pool. These students will be allowed to attend summer school in 2018. Both votes were unanimous.
Another expulsion hearing was scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, preceding the regular meeting of the board.
