DECATUR — Sometime during the morning of Nov. 9, a maintenance crew from Kansas City Southern Railroad began work on a pair of tank cars parked on a siding near the depot in Decatur.
It was not clear just what the crew was doing to these cars which were parked on the siding since late October. Two of the crew members were dressed in white biohazard suits. The workers descended into the northernmost car with a six-inch fire hose that ran from the car, over the bridge that spans the Decatur Branch of the Columbia Hollow Creek and into a mobile pump.
Since there appeared to be no leaks either on the ground or airborne, it is possible the crew was cleaning the cars. Kansas City Southern was contacted by email on Nov. 10 but had not responded by press time.
