— On Nov. 10, students from the Gentry Intermediate School honored veterans with patriotic songs and words of thanks. Among letters written to veterans to thank them for their service were the following four, read at the special Veterans Day assembly.

Dear Veteran,

Veterans have been protecting America since the beginning of our nation. You selflessly risked your lives for random people that you have never even met. I love how you protect our freedom and rights. Without you, this place that we are standing in wouldn't be the same America. You risked your lives so our lives would be saved. If you had never joined the military, most of us wouldn't even be here right now. In the air, oceans and land stands freedom close by. Ever since I heard of the people that protected us, I knew that they were better than any imaginary superhero that I could ever think of. Thank you.

Sincerely, Angelo Lavi.

Dear Hero,

My name is Makenzie Riley. I am in the fifth grade at Gentry Intermediate School. I love to read, write and draw. I can do all these things and more because of you. You are a guardian and a savior. We will never be able to thank you enough for what you did and do for our country. To me, Veterans Day is not just thanking soldiers, it is honoring sacrifices amazing people like you have made. You sacrificed many things to give us freedom that we might not realize that we have. My favorite Veterans Day song is the National Anthem. This song reminds me how soldiers like you have been fighting for America since we first became a country. It is hard to imagine the struggles and trials you have faced in foreign lands. Even though you knew there was going to be trouble and hardships, you still defended us selflessly. Thank you for being brave and a real superhero.

Yours truly, Makenzie Riley

Dear Veterans,

You are the reason why we can fly Old Glory. Some people fail to recognize the magnitude of your service, but I don't. Those people didn't get up at 3 in the morning and serve until they went to bed, sore. I thank you for going out and defending our country. We recognize those who never made it back to their homes with the family who loved them. I want to honor those who lost their lives fighting for America and bless their families. I appreciate you, a person who wanted a better life for them and us. With that, I will say with joy and praise that "I am proud to be an American." Thank you, heroes.

Yours Truly, Kodi Starkey

Dear Hero,

We're writing these letters to tell you, "thank you," for what you did and continue to do. You helped us through many tough times in America's history. If you start thinking about the American Flag, One Nation Under God means all of us are one. We're glad you helped us when we needed it. Some people don't acknowledge your sacrifice, but Gentry Intermediate School does. We are truly grateful for all that you do.

With love, Christopher Barber, and I'm from Gentry Intermediate School.
