Gentry holds homecoming ceremonies Friday

Senior Lauren Fowler crowned 2017 homecoming queen; theme was ‘Once a Pioneer, Always a Pioneer’

— The theme for this year's homecoming in Gentry was "Once a Pioneer, Always a Pioneer," and homecoming ceremonies on Friday began by recognizing former Gentry High School homecoming queens at the Sept. 29 game.

In addition to dress-up days, float building, spirit sheet painting, class cheers, and powder-puff football games (see Page B4 for photos of the powder puff games) at the high school, the homecoming festivities last week included a parade on Friday afternoon with floats from each class and numerous other parade entries. The parade route began at the high school, went north on Pioneer Lane, east on Third Street (Arkansas Highway 12), north on Smith Avenue, east on Main Street and ended at Arvest Bank at Main Street and Railroad Avenue.

Class winners of the sheet contests were the sophomores, followed by the freshmen, juniors and seniors. Club winner of the sheet contest was the theater and forensic team. The choir team came in second.

Sophomores won the float contest this year, with the juniors taking second and the seniors, third.

After introducing past homecoming queens, the homecoming ceremonies began with the introduction of the cheerleaders: sophomore cheerleader Madison Boyd, escorted by junior Trent Gore and sophomore Mateo Cain; sophomore cheerleader Falyn Cordeiro, escorted by sophomores Ben Philpott and Austin Williamson; junior cheerleader Whitly Cochran, escorted by juniors Peyton Wright and Travion Cain; junior cheerleader Nicole Guntharp, escorted by junior Jackson Bolinger and sophomore Jose Barrios; senior cheerleader Hannah Bennett, escorted by sophomore Charlie Reams and junior Devon Ellis; senior cheerleader Kya DeZurik, escorted by sophomores Brandon Atwood and Cody Weeks; and senior cheerleader Brookley Trammell, escorted by juniors Hunter Butler and Dylan Kilgore.

This year's football managers are juniors Laney Fredrick, Hayley Murphy and Lily Navarette, and senior Lynzey Sikes.

The 2017 Gentry homecoming court included: freshman class maid Emma Anderson, escorted by sophomore Kyle Dilbeck; freshman class maid Ashlyn Little, escorted by sophomore Brett Hester; freshman class maid Halle Nicole Reid, escorted by sophomore Ross Wilmoth; sophomore class maid Victoria Rose Barnes, escorted by sophomore Azariah Wood; sophomore class maid Shawna Moua, escorted by sophomore Cody Oertel; sophomore class maid Sadie Reece, escorted by sophomore Kerlose Ruzek; junior class maid Madison Powlowski, escorted by junior Rowdy Trammell; junior class maid Danielle Spencer, escorted by junior Dylan Rayburn; junior class maid Brently Wade, escorted by senior Konner Hodges; this year's kindergarten mascots, Juliet Smartt, Tyler Fox and Sawyer Smith; senior class maid Abby Asencio, escorted by seniors Tanner Christie and Matthew Nance; senior class maid Jennifer Carrera, escorted by seniors Tomas Gomez and Daniel Thao; senior class maid Alexis Droddy, escorted by senior Mason Clark and junior Garrett Hays; senior class maid Lauren Nicole Fowler, escorted by seniors Jon "Doo" Faulkenberry and Garrett Matthews; senior class maid Karadie Ory, escorted by seniors Logan Linton and Myles McFerron; senior class maid Haylee Elizabeth Pyburn, escorted by seniors JT Crosby and Jacob Lothes.

The 2017 GHS football captains were Tanner Christie and Jon "Doo" Faulkenberry. The 2017 GHS homecoming queen was Lauren Fowler.

The homecoming maids all carried lilies on Friday night in honor of 2017 graduate Lily Murphy, who was recently killed in a traffic accident.
