DECATUR -- The Decatur City Council received a bit of good news during its regular Oct. 9 session.

First on the agenda was the swearing-in ceremony of Mark Burden to the Decatur Housing Authority. Bob Tharp, former Justice of the Peace, presided over the proceedings.

Burden will take the seat vacated by former mayor Charles Linam, who passed away suddenly last May.

After nearly four years, the city of Decatur finally received word that the old Head Start building, located next to city hall, was available. On Sept. 29, Susan Templeton, executive director of Northwest Arkansas Head Start, and Tharp signed an agreement turning control of the building over to the city.

Several ideas for use of the building were suggested, including use as a community building or an expanded library facility. The council will look into these and any other options for the building in the coming months.

City workers have already cleared brush and debris from the old playground area. The city is looking to turn this into additional parking for city hall and the facility itself.

In other business, the council approved July 11 minutes of the Decatur Housing Authority.

The Decatur City Council meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the conference room at city hall. The first 30 minutes of each meeting is devoted to citizens' comments or concerns. For more information, contact the city clerk's office at 479-752-3912.
