DECATUR — Decatur Public School District was awarded the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant again this year.
Beginning Sept. 11, students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to attend from 3 to 6 p.m. This after-school club time, called "SPARK" (Strengthening Personal Development And Reinforcing Knowledge), has been created to provide academic/homework tutoring services and enrichment time to promote math and literacy skills. In addition, several extracurricular activities are being offered to enhance personal and social development.
Some of the activities that will be offered on a rotational and seasonal basis include archery, fishing, arts and crafts, dance, martial arts, winter guard, college and career readiness, computer skills and coding, and cake decorating. Students will be placed in these activities based on age, level of interest and need and availability. The program will be fully staffed by Decatur School District employees, Boys and Girls Club and other community partners.
Beginning Oct. 2, dinner will be offered at 4:45 p.m. each day. Students 18 and under are free. Adults 19 and older will be charged $3.50. All are welcome to join.
SPARK will follow the regular school calendar. Students in middle and high school will be bused over to the elementary school each day for SPARK. Beginning Oct. 2, bus transportation home from SPARK will be offered. Parents are responsible for picking their children up no later than 6 p.m. each day until then.
