DECATUR -- The Decatur Lady Bulldog volleyball team had its hands full as it hosted the Lincoln Lady Wolves at Peterson Gym in Decatur Sept. 5. It was a back-and-forth contest but, eventually, the Lady Wolves won the match, 3-0, over the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldog senior team took the court wearing gold headbands to remember Remington Anderson who recently passed away from a long fight with cancer. His oldest sister, Savanna Dodson, is a member of the senior team.

In the opening set of the senior match, the Lady Bulldogs were able to hit seven straight points on plays by Desi Meek, Talor Thompson, Mathline Jesse and Destiny Meija. The Decatur front line worked well throughout the early stages of the first set. But the Lady Wolves fought back and eventually overtook the Lady Bulldogs to win the first set, 25-19.

The second set started much the same as the first, with Decatur taking an early lead. But a series of concentration errors cost the Lady Bulldogs that lead. A long series of rallies by both teams resulted in the lead switching back and forth. The set was tied at 23 all when the Lady Wolves dropped two, one just inside the back court and the other between two Decatur players, to win the set, 25-23.

The third and what would be the final set went back and forth between Decatur and Lincoln until a series of simple errors by the Lady Bulldogs allowed the Lady Wolves to pull ahead and take the set with five straight points, 25-20, and the match 3-0.

In other volleyball matches, the junior high team won in two sets, 25-17 and 25-23, to win its second straight match. The junior varsity lost to Lincoln in three sets.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The gold headbands are worn across the country to raise awareness of this killer disease. The Decatur volleyball team asked Decatur area residents to donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to help find a cure for this disease.
