Letter to the Editor

Editor,

I have never written a letter to the editor before. I just wanted to remind everyone there are elderly people who live in Gravette. I am one and at times am dependent on someone younger, such as our youth, for help.

We have wonderful youth in our little town, which was proven to me almost four years ago when someone destroyed my mailbox. As I was reporting it to the police, a young man I did not know heard my complaint and knew my need. He stepped up and said, "Maam, I heard your complaint. Are you going to be home at 2 p.m.? If so, I will come up and fix your problem."

After letting him know I would be home at 2 p.m., he came with a post and post hole diggers and within an hour had my mailbox up. We had a long talk. He had been taught to help and respect others and was ready to help in time of need. I'm sure lots of you would know Adam Donnell. What a blessing he was that day!

Last Monday, sometime between 3:15 and 4 p.m., someone demolished my mailbox again. I know accidents happen, and I am not writing this to punish them. I was home but I did not hear them place the post and all the broken pieces quietly on my porch, along with the mail. But they failed to ring the doorbell, let me know what happened and see if I needed help getting it fixed.

I don't know who you are, but you know who you are. I don't have the strength to dig a hole and put up a post, but I can have it done. It would be nice to know if you thought it might be a problem. I know, during that time, students in high school are rushing to get home and the street is busy. I am not saying it was a young person but just wanted to say, "Everyone, be careful, respect the property of others and show each other respect and kindness."

Gravette is a great place to live. Let's keep it that way.
