Lions defeat Elks, lose against Blackhawks

GRAVETTE -- The Gravette Lions split a pair of games last week, losing at home against the Pea Ridge Blackhawks March 29 and winning on the road in Elkins March 30.

The Lions jumped out ahead of the Blackhawks with a run each in the first and second innings. But a series of simple errors by Gravette in the second, third and fourth innings allowed Pea Ridge to take a commanding 12-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. Gravette managed two runs in the fifth, but Pea Ridge was able to hold the Lions scoreless in the sixth and seventh to take a 12-4 conference win.

On the mound for the Lions was Jake Carver, who pitched three complete innings, throwing 67 pitches. He had nine hits, six runs, four earned runs, four strikeouts and one walk. He was replaced by Hunter Cole who pitched one inning, throwing 38 pitches. He had three hits, six runs, three earned runs, one strikeout and three walks.

Also pitching for Gravette was Issac Sullivan who pitched one inning, 27 pitches with two walks. Thomas Tryon completed the game, pitching two innings, 26 pitches and three hits.

Pea Ridge: 39-AB, 12-R, 15-H, 8-RBI, 6-BB, 5-SO.

Gravette jumped out in front with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. But Elkins also brought home a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2. The Elks took the lead in the bottom of the third and extended it by three in the fifth inning to 6-3. Four runs in the sixth and seventh innings gave the Lions the lead by one. Elkins was unable to answer the Gravette scoring drive, giving the Lions a 7-6 win.

Kelton Tajchman was on the mound for the Lions, pitching four innings while throwing 57 times. He allowed four hits, three runs, three earned runs and had three strikeouts and one walk. Brodie Parsons relieved Tajchman, completing three innings, throwing 61 pitches. He allowed three hits, three runs, three earned runs and five strikeouts and two walks.
