Pioneers lose season opener to Sand Lizards

GENTRY -- The Pioneers' only two touchdowns in Friday's game at Dardanelle came in the third and fourth quarters on a passing play to Dylan Rayburn and a long Brandon Atwood run. The Pioneers lost their non-conference season opener, 38-12.

The Sand Lizards raced to an early lead with a field goal in the first quarter and two touchdowns in the second, making it 17-0 at the half.

Dardanelle picked up another touchdown in the third and two in the fourth and made all of its point-after kicks for the 38-12 final.

Brandon Atwood, Gentry's junior quarterback, led the Pioneers in rushing yards, with 138 yards on 16 carries. Gentry's other ball carriers were stopped cold with average gains of a yard or less.

The Pioneers picked up 137 yards in the air, with Peyton Wright, a senior, picking up 35 yards on six receptions. Dylan Kilgor, a senior, picked up 44 yards on two receptions. Dylan Rayburn, also a senior, caught two short passes, one of them for a touchdown.

Rowdy Trammell, a senior, picked off a Dardanelle pass in the game.

On Friday, the Pioneers travel to Huntsville to take on the Eagles. Game time is 7 p.m.
