GRAVETTE -- "Pawsitive" and Wise Student winners at Glenn Duffy Elementary School were given awards at the school's monthly Rise and Shine assembly. GDE students, staff and guests celebrated as youngsters were recognized for class and individual awards. PAWS grade-level students of the month for February are Mikayla Brafford, Judd Casey, Molly Flynt, Landon Handle, Gabrielle Meyer and Jackson Moretto.

The PAWS Program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education. The school staff always watches for opportunities to encourage students for excellent character, behavior or effort.

Many Glenn Duffy Elementary students were recognized for classroom PAWS awards, Terrific Kids or Box Top awards.

The character word for this month is patience. This is defined as waiting calmly without complaining during times of frustration and/or trouble. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is often quoted, "Good things will happen to the person who waits." This character trait pairs quite well with this month's social skill, waiting your turn. Steps to practice this skill include 1) take a deep breath and count to 10, 2) think about good choices you can make (talk it out, walk away to a safe place, find an adult to help), 3) make the best choice. Kindergarten teachers modeled expectations of how students may be successful in using this skill. Teachers are Diana Cradduck, MaryJo Norberg, Kristy Sanders, Misty Arment, Autumn Phillips, Christina Hartman and Teresa Spence.
