GRAVETTE -- Gravette High School's principal is leaving at the end of this school year to become superintendent of the Atkins School District.

Jay Chalk has worked in education for 25 years in Texas and Arkansas. He has been Gravette High School's principal since 2012. The Atkins School Board decided to hire him Friday, Chalk said.

"It's time for me to make that step," he said. "I hate leaving Gravette because we love it here."

Atkins, about an hour northwest of Little Rock along Interstate 40, is a district of about 1,000 students. Gravette High School has about 600 students. Chalk will start his new job July 1. He'll replace Joe Fisher, who last month submitted notice of his intent to resign at the end of this school year.

Chalk and his wife, Jennifer, have three children, two of whom are enrolled in the Gravette district. Jennifer Chalk is a teacher at Gravette Upper Elementary School.
