Gravette schools seeking input on millage increase for facility improvements

The Gravette School District is conducting an online survey to gain the public's opinion about requesting a millage increase of 1-3 mills for proposed facility improvements. Facility needs described in the survey include remodeling Glenn Duffy Elementary School, remodeling older middle school classrooms, adding additional career classroom space and building a new competition gymnasium. The public is being encouraged to participate in the survey so the district can determine the level of support the projects would have for a possible May 2018 millage proposal. Decatur library board to meet Jan. 11

Quilt show set for Gentry

The annual Gentry Chamber of Commerce Quilt Show is set for Friday, Jan. 12, through Friday, Jan. 19, at the McKee Community Room in the Gentry Public Library, at 105 East Main Street in Gentry. The quilts will be on display there each day of the show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Some of the categories include hand-quilted, machine-quilted, applique, hand-pieced, machine-pieced, child or baby quilt, wall-hanging quilt, antique quilt and family heirloom. Quilt entries will be received for the show on Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, call the Chamber office at 479-736-2358. Blood Drive set for Jan. 24 in Gentry

A blood drive has been scheduled in Gentry from 1 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 24 at the Mckee Foods Bakery Store, at Main Street and Gentry Blvd. While all blood types are urgently needed, there is a more critical need for type O negative, type B negative and type AB. Eligible donors can find a blood donation opportunity and schedule an appointment to donate by using the free Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass are encouraged to help speed up the donation process. RapidPass lets donors complete the pre-donation reading and answer the health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, by visiting redcrossblood.org/rapidpass from the convenience of a mobile device or computer, or through the Blood Donor App.

Free GED prep classes

Free classes to prepare people for taking the GED exam are being offered from Jan. 16 through May 11 at the Gravette Public Library. Classes will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday evenings only, at the library, 119 Main Street S.E. Interested persons may enroll by calling 479-986-6911 or by attending the class. Classes are open enrollment. Students may start anytime and finish when they are ready.

Living with Alzheimer's seminar set Jan 17

The Alzheimer's Association will present a seminar, "Living with Alzheimer's: Younger-Onset Alzheimer's," at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 17, inside Siloam Springs Regional Hospital's Classroom 1. A free lunch will be provided. The program offers answers to questions about younger-onset (also known as early-onset) Alzheimer's disease. Hear from those directly affected and learn how to ease the impact throughout the course of the disease.

Women's Health seminar set Jan. 25

Dr. Natalie Eiland will present "A New Year, a Healthier You" women's health seminar starting at 12:15 p.m. on Jan. 25, inside Siloam Springs Regional Hospital's Classroom 1 at 603 N. Progress Ave. in Siloam Springs. Dr. Eiland will speak about the importance of women's health screenings such as HPV, cervical cancer and mammograms. This seminar is for women of all ages and is free to the community. A free lunch also will be provided.

Decatur UMC Pantry open first, third Thursdays

The Decatur United Methodist Church Food Pantry is open the first and third Thursday evening of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and offers food boxes to Decatur residents. All that is needed is a valid identification, a utility bill or piece of mail showing an address in the 72722 ZIP code area. Also available is a USDA commodity program to residents of Decatur and other communities without a commodity program. The commodity program requires income information. GFA Food Pantry open Tuesdays at Gentry AG church

The GFA Food Pantry at the First Assembly of God in Gentry is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. The church partnered with the NWA Food Bank and Rural Compassion to receive food to be given away, including canned goods, fresh vegetables, bread, milk and dairy products, eggs, and meats as part of the only certified food bank in Gentry. Other items such as toilet paper, shampoo, cleaning products and baby supplies, are also available as supplies last. Clients are asked to call for an appointment. The Gravette Lions Club meets at noon, the first and third Tuesday of the month at the Billy V. Hall Senior Activity and Wellness Center, 1870 Limekiln Road, in Gravette. The Gentry Lions Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of the month at the McKee Community Room in Gentry Public Library. New members are welcome and invited.

Monthly singing services at Falling Springs Church are held at 7 p.m. the first Friday of each month. The church is located northwest of Gentry and west of Decatur on Falling Springs Road.

Museum seeks school yearbooks

The Gravette Historical Museum Commission is trying to acquire Gravette High School yearbooks to add to the museum's collection. Annuals are still needed for the years 1977, 1979, 1984, 1998 and 1999. Those willing to donate the above annuals are asked to call museum commissioner Lavon Stark at 479-787-5678.
