GRAVETTE -- Members of the Gravette Lions Club celebrated a Charter Day, marking the fifth anniversary of the date the club was chartered, at their regular meeting Tuesday, July 3, at the Billy V. Hall Senior Activity Center. Several activities were held at the meeting and refreshments were served afterward to mark the occasion.
Members voted to change their meeting time to 12:15 p.m. Following the business meeting, president Bill Mattler inducted a new member into the club. Howard Benson was presented a special centennial pin and certificate denoting that he became a member during the Lions Club centennial year. Snooky Garrett stood in for Benson's sponsor, his wife Karen, since she was unable to attend.
Mattler gave a brief State of the Club address, summarizing the year's accomplishments, especially the club's installation of a new human foosball court for the city. He said he had really enjoyed his year as president and felt the club had an excellent slate of new officers.
New officers installed at the meeting include Al Blair, president; Melissa Steele, secretary-treasurer; Cela Gaytan, tail twister, Lion tamer and director. Bill Mattler, as outgoing president, is also a director. Jeff Davis, second vice district governor, was the installing officer. Karen Benson, vice-president, will be installed at the next meeting.
Mattler, Davis and new president Al Blair presented Sue Rice with a Lion of the Year award certificate. Rice and her sister, Snooky Garrett, have provided free diabetic testing at several Lions Club functions and she helped with every work day at the Lions' new foosball court.
A cake decorated with the words "Happy Birthday, Gravette Lions Club" and candles in a five-pointed star denoting the club's five years of service was served, along with ice cream, following the meeting. The club was chartered on June 30, 2013.
The next meeting of the club will be held at 12:15 Tuesday, July 17, at the Senior Center.
