DECATUR -- May 29 was a time for our nation to remember all the brave military servicemen and women who laid down their lives in defense of freedom around the world. One local group remembered those veterans in a very special way.

Fourteen kids from the Decatur 4-H Club and their sponsors gathered at the Falling Springs Cemetery near Decatur on May 23 to plant more than 50 white metal cross on the graves of all fallen veterans buried in the graveyard. Topping the crosses were small American flags honoring the veterans' commitment to the United States.

Several six-inch plastic pipes were planted in the ground near the side of each headstone. This enabled the crosses to be removed after the holidays and be replanted before the next one.

Stephanie Guinn, the group's leader, organized the event to commemorate the Memorial Day 2018 observance. The mission took a little over an hour to complete.

The Decatur 4-H Club meets the second Sunday of every month at 2 p.m. in the cafeteria at Decatur High School. For more information, contact Stephanie Guinn at 479-238-3985.
