DECATUR -- With the recent rise in the venomous snake population at Crystal Lake near Decatur, swimmers are seeking out new places to beat the summer heat.

After passing a recent inspection early, the Decatur city pool, located at Old City Park on Second Street, opened its gates to area swimmers June 6.

Leading the lifeguard team this season is Decatur native Cameron Shaffer. Shaffer is joined by Savanna Dodson, Jimmy Mendoza, Amanda Duncan, Wayne Wilkins and Ryan Shaffer. All six have passed their proficiency training and are now fully-certified lifeguards.

The Decatur city pool is open from 12 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For cost information, contact the city clerk's office at 479-752-3912. Free swim day for the pool will be June 21.
