Summer Reading program underway in Gentry

Westside Eagle Observer/RANDY MOLL Children were treated to some "rockin' music" at the opening session of the Gentry Public Library's summer reading program on June 5. The musicians, dubbed by Mayor Kevin Johnston as the Public Works Band, are Chase Shawver (left), Mark Bunce, Jeremy McJunkin and Clint Osborne (on the drums). The band members work for the city of Gentry, in the public works department by day but play music together after hours. They were called in to help kickoff the summer reading program because of its focus on music. The June 5 session focused on types of music, and the band members played a variety of music for their young fans.

GENTRY -- Libraries Rock is the theme of this year's summer reading program at Gentry Public Library. The program is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays through July 31 and is held in the McKee Community Room at the library.

On June 5, four employees of Gentry's public works department -- Mark Bunce, Chase Shawver, Jeremy McJunkin and Clint Osborne -- entertained the summer reading program's young guests with a variety of music accompanied by guitar, bass guitar and drums. Gentry's mayor, Kevin Johnston, dubbed the group "The Public Works Band." The theme for the day was types of music, and the band provided a good number of examples of different types of music.

Upcoming themes include Music, Memory and Learning -- June 19; History of Music -- June 26; Movie Music -- July 3; Voice -- July 10; Music Around the World -- July 17; Music in Video Games -- July 24; and a Wrap Party on July 31.

The reading program also includes games and special projects. The final party will include games, music and prizes. Children may register at the library during regular library hours. The first 45 to sign up were to receive a special gift bag.
