U.S. justified in withdrawing from UNHRC

The United States was right to withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council. The UNHRC was created in 2006 and boycotted by the U.S. until it joined in 2009 under the Obama administration. Its purpose is to investigate and condemn the violation of human rights -- something it has failed to do.

There are several reasons the United States was correct to leave. First, many of the nations on the council are violators of human rights. They include Afghanistan, Qatar, Cuba and China. Secondly, few of these nations have been condemned. Thirdly, Article 7 of the UNHRC singles out and attacks Israel, a country which is one of America's staunchest allies, as well as being a unique democracy in the Middle East. Additionally, the council continually keeps the Palestine conflict on the agenda.

By withdrawing from the council, the United States is telling the United Nations that it needs to reconsider its mission and how it achieves it. As a sovereign nation, the U.S. can and should continue to stand by the truth that the purpose of government is to secure "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
