Several events occurred in Decatur last week. The biggest news is that our barbecue building at Veterans Park sustained major damage on Saturday, March 10, during a fire. No one was hurt and our fire department did an amazing job saving the structure. We will begin repair work very soon. Chief Jeremy Luker just reported that the department was out on calls until 5 a.m. that day. Remember to thank our Volunteer Fire Department.
On Thursday, March 9, Crystal Lake Farms was honored as a business in our city with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which included employees, members of Decatur Chamber of Commerce and city officials. We would like to welcome Crystal Lake Farms to our community.
On Friday, March 9, a new drive was installed at the Decatur Cemetery. This drive exits off Highway 102 at the far east side of the cemetery. This drive will make traffic flow safer and give improved access to the 10 acres we have recently opened up. The city crews recently put more gravel on the driveways throughout the cemetery.
At the corner of Hill Street and Highway 59, the city installed a new flagpole, removed two large trees and painted the sign with a fresh coat of white paint. Coming next week (March 12), a new sign will bear critical information about Decatur. Decatur Sports Department dedication ceremony at this location is planned for 1 p.m. on Monday. The public is welcome to attend and enjoy our new sign.
