GRAVETTE -- "Pawsitive" and Wise Student winners at Glenn Duffy Elementary School were honored at the monthly Rise and Shine assembly Monday, March 5. Staff and students celebrated as the students were recognized for class and individual awards. PAWS grade-level students of the month for March are Jayden Alexander, Jace Bates, Myla Burnett, Jack Frizzel, Rachel Heath and Paislee Weems.

The PAWS program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month, PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education. School staff members watch for opportunities to encourage students for excellent character, behavior or effort.

The character word for the month is responsibility. This is defined as knowing and doing what is expected of you. Benjamin Franklin is often quoted, "It is better to do a good job than to just talk about it." Karen Benson, Gravette Public Library supervisor, was the special guest of the day. She relayed to students the importance of doing their best work in school and at home. She helped them understand that even taking care of pets can be hard work and a lot of responsibility. Our pets count on us to take care of them.

This month's social skill is apologizing. Steps to practice this skill include: 1) Think about what you need to apologize for; 2) walk up to the person you need to apologize to; 3) look at them, say, "I'm sorry," and explain why; and 4) listen to what the person says. Second-grade teachers showed students how to use the skill by portraying an argument about rainy-day games. Teachers are Jennifer Davis, Angie Denver, Vicki Holloway, Jared Magness, Traci Rutledge and Amber Sisemore.

The school's Parent Teacher Organization recently completed a Subway card fundraiser. Glenn Duffy families helped raise nearly $1,450. Students with the most sales per grade were Troy Pickett (pre-K), Sydnee Edwards (kindergarten), Christopher Guy (first grade), Grace Finley (second grade) and Rylea Daylong (overall). Many other Glenn Duffy Elementary students were recognized for classroom PAWS awards, Terrific Kids or Box Top awards.
