Pioneers lose three in play last week

GENTRY -- The Pioneers came up short in play last week, losing to Jay, Okla., on Thursday, Harrison on March 6 and Elkins on March 5. The Gentry boys lost to Jay Thursday at the Merrill Reynolds Memorial Complex in Gentry after Jay took an early lead by scoring five runs each in the first and second innings. After picking up a solo run in the bottom of the first when Dylan Rayburn scored on a Myles McFerron sacrifice to short, the Pioneers scored six in the bottom of the second inning. Ayden Smartt hit a ground ball out into left and brought home Ross Wilmoth, and Rowdy Trammell and Garrett Matthews scored on an error by the left fielder. Smartt scored on a McFerron single, and Rayburn and McFerron scored on a Peyton Wright single. Gentry managed another two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, but Jay added one in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the seventh to take the game, 14-11.

Gentry had 10 hits in the game. Jay had eight. Gentry had 11 errors to Jay's four.

McFerron, Smartt and Damon Phillps pitched for Gentry.

Against Harrison in Gravette on March 6, the Pioneers lost, 5-1, in three innings, with the game being called early due to the weather.

Gentry's only run came in the first inning when Ayden Smartt crossed the plate.

Harrison scored one in the first and four in the third inning.

Dylan Rayburn and Damon Phillips pitched for Gentry.

On March 5, the Pioneers hosted the visiting Elkins Elks but lost the game in the top of the first when nine Elks crossed the plate.

The Pioneers scored solo runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

Elkins finished with 14 runs on 11 hits, and Gentry had three runs on four hits. Each team was charged with only one error.

Kyke Dilbeck, Konner Hodges, Garrett Matthews and Colby Young all took turns on the mound for Gentry.
