April 3 game will promote breast cancer awareness

— When the Gentry girls play softball against Greenland on Tuesday, April 3, in Gentry, both teams will wear jerseys urging breast cancer awareness.

The Silvey-Welch Team of Crye-Leike has sponsored a breast cancer awareness game and has purchased jerseys for both teams to wear during the doubleheader.

Each team member, player, manager and coach will be playing in honor of or in memory of someone who has battled breast cancer. Survivors in attendance will be invited on the field and be announced, along with the players. All will join hands in a moment of silence for those who have fought and are no longer with us, as a show of solidarity for the theme of “No One Fights Alone.”

One in eight American women battles breast cancer during her lifetime. There are 46 girls on the two teams combined. Sadly, statistically speaking, five to six of the girls will face the battle.

Between games, the mothers will feed both teams and the survivors. Facts will be presented regarding the importance of early detection.

Each team member will have a Sharpie marker and is encouraged to get as many “autographs” as possible during the day. The team hopes to educate girls and prepare them in the event that they should have to fight and to let them know they can win and that they won’t face the battle alone.

The public is invited to come out and receive and share valuable information that could save a life.

Donations have been received from individuals and businesses in support of this team effort. The first game begins at 4:30 p.m.
