Gravette pounds Berryville to reach regional final

LINCOLN -- Gravette took charge early against Berryville after barely winning its first game Saturday morning.

Sumer Kaba hit a three-run home run in the first inning as Gravette overwhelmed Berryville, 15-0, Saturday afternoon in the 4A North Regional Tournament. Gravette was still batting in the bottom of the third inning when the game was called because of the sportsmanship rule.

Gravette advanced to face Pottsville in the championship game on Monday at 2:30 p.m.

Lizzy Ellis added a two-run double for Gravette, which scored five runs in the first and eight runs in the second inning. Bailey Elmore did not allow a hit and walked two in three innings in the circle.

Gravette dominated Berryville after edging Dover, 3-2, in a game that was played at Farmington Saturday morning. Gravette scored the winning run in the seventh inning after falling behind, 2-0, in the first against Dover.

The Lady Lions (21-6) got a pep talk on the way to Lincoln for their semifinal game, but it didn't come from coach Taos Jones. It came from sophomore Gabbi Scott.

"Gabbi said to the team 'we need to step up and be more aggressive,'" Jones said. "I like when it comes from the players."

Gravette was already ahead, 2-0, in the first inning when Kaba hit a three-run home run that cleared the wall in left field at the Lincoln softball field. Gravette added eight more runs on only four hits in the second inning.

"I think we got warmed up in the first game for this one," Jones said.

Berryville was held hitless by Elmore, who contributed a single and scored two runs for the Lady Lions.

Berryville made three of its four errors in the third inning when the game was stopped.
