Council approves ordinance establishing the Decatur Historical Commission

DECATUR -- It was three months in the making, but the Decatur Historical Committee is finally a part of the city as a new commission and will oversee the many historical sites and artifacts.

The Decatur City Council approved the measure (on the third reading) during the May 14 city council meeting at Decatur City Hall.

The ordinance establishes a six-person board of trustees consisting of Mike Eckels, Mark Wilkins, Jeanelle Cox, Pat and Lester Austin and Lynval Abercrombie. In addition to the six commissioners, a council representative will sit on the board as a non-voting member. Linda Martin will fill this position.

The board will retain its regular meeting time, which is 5 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month or as needed.

The Decatur Historical Commission will oversee the operation of the Decatur Depot, log cabin, storage shed and artifacts on display both outside and inside the museum.

Once the commission obtains it 501(c)(3) not for profit status, it will go to work to make available the depot and log cabin for school groups and historical organizations.

The city council also passed on the third reading an amendment to ordinance 99-02 that established a ceiling for the Undercover Operation Fund of the Decatur Police Department. A cap of $10,000 is now in place for that fund. Anything over that amount will immediately go into the city's general fund.

In other council news, a bid for construction of a new chicken shack at Veterans Park was accepted by the council.

The Decatur City Council meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the conference room at Decatur City Hall. The first 30 minutes of the meeting is opened for citizen comments and concerns. For more information, contact the city clerk's office at 479-752-3912, option 4.
