DECATUR -- Memorial Day is a time to remember all military veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the preservation of peace and freedom throughout the world.

Members of the Decatur Veterans Committee took a little time May 19 to put up around 70 crosses on the graves of military veterans interred at Decatur Cemetery. Joining the committee were members of the Howard-Parish Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9834 in Decatur and American Legion Post 29 in Siloam Springs.

Currently, there are 140 military veterans interred in the Decatur Cemetery.

The crosses placed on these graves were on temporary loan from other veterans groups.

The veterans committee is starting a project to build 140 medal crosses and ground support columns which will be placed on the gravesites during Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day each year. The committee is asking for donations to complete this project. The cost of each cross will be $10.
