DECATUR -- Decatur school district teachers, staff and administrators gathered at the Gallery Cafe in Decatur on May 17 to celebrate the end of the 2017-18 school year.

Prior to the meal, Jeff Gravette, Decatur superintendent, announced the 2018 Teacher of the Year recipients and also acknowledged the district's two retirees.

The faculty and staff of each school nominated and voted for the candidate that goes above and beyond to give students the best chance at a bright future.

The 2017-18 Decatur School District Teachers of the Year are Christina Brown from Decatur Northside Elementary, Ashley Riggles from Decatur Middle School and James Garner from Decatur High School.

Sadly, the Decatur district had to say goodbye to two of its long-term teachers who decided to retire this year after a combined 28 years of service to the students: Deborah Wenger, who was a kindergarten teacher at Decatur Northside Elementary, after 12 years of service; Anita Warren, who was the special-needs teacher and foreign exchange program sponsor at Decatur High School for the past 16 years.

Both Wenger and Warren received a plaque in recognition of their years of service to the Decatur School District and the community.
