Benton County officials OK new radio system

BENTONVILLE -- The Benton County Quorum Court on Thursday approved spending $3.75 million Thursday for a new radio system for the Sheriff's Office and Jail and other departments.

The new digital communication system will also require local police and fire departments to upgrade their radio equipment to use the new system. Though the Sheriff's Office has promised some money to help out smaller departments with the expense, how municipalities will pay their costs for the new radios is, in many cases, yet to be decided.

Tom Allen, justice of the peace for District 4 and chairman of the Finance Committee, said that panel will consider how to pay the money when it meets at 6 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Quorum Courtroom in the County Administration Building, 215 E. Central Ave. in Bentonville.
