Gravette Lions Club schedules human foosball games Saturday

GRAVETTE -- Human foosball games, sponsored by the Gravette Lions Club, will be held Saturday morning, Oct. 20, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the foosball court in Pop Allum Park. Matches have been scheduled between a Lions team and a team from the Gravette Kiwanis Club. Staff members of the Bentonville and Bella Vista Boys and Girls Clubs have also been invited to field teams.

These exhibition games are designed to introduce area residents to the relatively unknown sport and acquaint them with the joys of playing the game. It is hoped youth and adults from area churches, students from local schools and members of clubs and organizations will come out and watch and familiarize themselves with the sport. They can then take advantage of the opportunity to add a new sport to their list of recreation activities.

The local human foosball court was suggested by Danny White, owner and operator of Cardinal Pawn in Gravette, who told the local Lions Club that he would pay for materials for the court if its members would provide the labor. The cost was shared by Cardinal Pawn, the Gravette Lions Club and the Lions of Arkansas Foundation (LOAF). Six members and two volunteers spent 78 hours constructing the court this spring, and a ribbon cutting and dedication was held June 30 as part of the city's Independence Day celebration.

The Gravette field is the only permanent human foosball court in the state. It is located on the northeast corner of Pop Allum Park, just south of the skate park. The game is a full-size version of the popular tabletop game. Two teams of six people must work together on sliding bars to kick a soccer ball through the goals.

Lion and Kiwanis members invite everyone to come out Saturday morning and cheer on their teams and help support the participants as they engage in this first friendly rivalry. Anyone seeking further information or interested in participating as a team member may call Jeff Davis, 479-787-1068, or email [email protected].
