When there's nothing else to give

— Mary Lara, an area resident, submitted a suggestion for those who wish to give a gift to a loved one but cannot afford to do so this year.

Instead of a gift, she suggested making a card and listing 10 statements about the loved one and giving that instead.

Her card to her mother read as follows:

1. We did not have much, but you showed us love.

2. We had to walk to school (from one to four miles), but you still loved us.

3. We did not get to have Christmas, but we received the gift of your love.

4. We did not have but one dress and one set of undergarment to wear to school, but love was there and you washed them every day.

5. You worked hard out of love for us and wondered how to feed us.

6. We did not receive toys for Christmas, but we received love.

7. We saw you cry many times when there was no work and no food to feed us, but love was there.

8. We didn’t get what we desired, but we had love.

9. Thanks, Mom, for the hard work you and dad did for us.

10. We don’t have much in material things now, but we still have your love.
