Decatur students place in poster contest, now go on to compete on national level

— Three Decatur students placed at the Arkansas Association of Conservation Districts’ 2009 poster contest and will be headed on to national competition.

The contest provides students in kindergarten through 12th grade an opportunity to convey their thoughts about soil, water and related natural resources, according to the National Association of Conservation District Web site, www.nacdnet. org.

The theme for this year’s contest was “Dig It! The Secrets of Soil.”

In the kindergarten through first grade category, Lauren Lewis won first place at the state level and will be receiving a check for $25.

In the second through third grade category, Coral Frydrychowski won third place at the state level and will be receiving a check for $10.

In the seventh through ninth grade category, CourtneyLawrence won first place at the state level and will be receiving a check for $25.

First place winners will advance on to the national poster contest, which will be judged between Jan. 31 and Feb. 3, according to art teacher Janette Raymond.

Lewis, Frydrychowski and Lawrence qualified for the state contest by winning best of show in the Benton County Conservation District 2009 poster contest. Five other Decatur students placed in the county contest.

Benton County Conservation District poster contest winners in the kindergarten through first grade category were all from Northside Elementary. Lewis was named best of show, Marvin Gramajo won first place and Zachary Luker won second place.

Winners in the second and third grade category were also all from Northside Elementary. Frydrychowski was named best of show, Amanda Duncan won first place and Be Lee won second place.

Lawrence won best of show in the seventh through ninth grade category and Linda Nguyen won second place in the fourth through sixth grade category.
