Library reading program kicks-off

— The “Make a Splash - Read” summer reading program at the Iva Jane Peek library kicked off last week with a tour of the Decatur Museum.

The reading program, for children age 4 through 9, began on June 28 and will last forfive weeks. Children age 4 to 6 meet on Tuesdays, and children age 7 to 9 will meet on Wednesdays.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the children toured the historic train depot, cabin, and engine and caboose on the Decatur Museum grounds, while librarian Melinda McCollum spoke about what it might have been like to live in a cabin or have to wait at the train depot to take a long trip, instead of driving in the family car.

Back at the library, children enjoyed coloring, stories andsnacks. Most of the summer reading program activites will focus on water, according to McCollum.

“Children will explore the world of water and water fun through stories, songs, games and other activities,” she said. “They will study oceans, rivers, lakes and pools and the creatures that live there.”

Children age 4 to 6 will meet from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m., on Tuesdays, beginning June 28, and children age 7 to 9 will meet from 1 p.m., until 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning June 29.
